Winters to me mean EXTREMELY dry hair and harsh weather conditions. One of the things I try to do regularly to keep my hair happy, healthy and moisturized is deep condition. I have a couple of store-bought favorites, but lately I’ve been into DIYs so I’m thinking about trying an at-home deep conditioner routine. The great thing about ALL of these recipes is that they all have one thing in common: they can all be made with basic ingredients from your kitchen.
Healthy hair does not have to be expensive or time consuming. These three deep conditioner recipes will show you how to achieve healthy hair on a low money and time budget!
CONDITIONER ONE: OLIVE OIL + HONEY
Olive oil and honey work great as a deep conditioner. The honey is awesome for adding moisture and for us 4c hair chicks olive oil is one of the best oils for our hair. Because it penetrates the hair shaft it’s also a great oil choice to deep condition (or pre-poo).
Combine 1/ 4 cup honey and 1 /4 cup olive oil in a bowl.
Mix the ingredients together.
When finished with mixing apply the mixture to your hair, cover, apply heat, rinse and style as usual.
CONDITIONER TWO: AVOCADO + COCONUT MILK + MAYO + HONEY + BANANA
All of these ingredients in this recipe are super moisturizing individually, but when combined, your hair is in for a real moisture treat. The mayonnaise is especially great for giving hair a healthy shine and added softness.
Combine 1 avocado, 1/ 2 can coconut milk, 1/ 4 cup mayonnaise, 1/ 4 cup honey and 1/ 2 banana (or 1 jar of banana baby food).
Blend all ingredients in a blender until smooth. If you don’t own a blender, you can use a hand mixer or mix everything by hand. It should be blended well until no chunks remain.
…keep blending until you are chunk free.
When done, apply the deep conditioner to your hair and cover your strands with a shower cap. Heat for at least 20 minutes, rinse the mixture out with cool water (no hot water). Make sure the concoction is completely rinsed out of your hair, then style as usual.
CONDITIONER THREE: COCONUT OIL + EGG
Coconut oil is one of my favorite oils; I use it for my hair, skin, nails and cooking. Coconut Oil will leave your hair looking healthy, shiny and very soft. The egg in this recipe adds value because it is great for strengthening the hair.
Melt 1/ 2 cup of coconut oil in a pan on the stovetop or in a bowl in the microwave until it is liquefied.
Next add an egg.
Mix both together well.
Note: If you’re hair is shoulder length or shorter OR you only want to treat the ends of your hair, 1/4 cup of coconut oil should be sufficient.
Apply the mixture to your hair and cover with a shower cap. Heat for about 20 minutes, wash out the mixture, condition and style as usual.
Tip: I know times are hard and not everybody has a sit under hair dryer or hair steamer. If you need an alternative for a great way to apply heat to your hair without one of these tools, check out this nifty way our Head 4C Hair Chick, Trudy, deep conditions her tresses here. I LOVE it!
These three recipes should have your coils moisturized a prepared to battle the winter’s cold.
